Formal conditional with Sollten:
- Sollten Sie weitere Unterlagen benötigen, wenden Sie sich bitte an uns. (Should you require further documents, please contact us.)
- Sollte Ihr Antrag abgelehnt werden, können Sie Widerspruch einlegen. (Should your application be rejected, you can file an objection.)
Structure: Sollten + subject + infinitive + ..., main clause
This replaces the more casual wenn in formal/official contexts. The verb sollten comes first (conditional inversion).
Key immigration vocabulary:
- einen Antrag stellen/einreichen (to file an application)
- die Aufenthaltserlaubnis verlängern (to renew the residence permit)
- sich bei der Ausländerbehörde anmelden (to register at the immigration office)
Formal correspondence patterns:
