Old French: "La pucele" → Modern: "La jeune fille" (the maiden/girl)
Loanwords and Borrowing
French has borrowed extensively:
- From English: le weekend, le parking, le marketing
- From Arabic: algèbre, algorithme, zéro, café
- From Italian: banque, casino, piano
Neologism Formation
New words emerge through:
- Mot-valise (portmanteau): courriel (courrier + électronique)
