Diplomatic French uses specific language patterns to negotiate, propose compromises, and maintain formal respect.
Diplomatic language (langage diplomatique):
- Nous serions enclins à accepter cette proposition. (We would be inclined to accept this proposal.)
- Il nous semble envisageable de faire une concession sur ce point. (It seems feasible to make a concession on this point.)
- Nous souhaiterions soumettre une contre-proposition. (We would like to submit a counter-proposal.)
Compromise formulations:
- Dans un esprit de compromis mutuel, nous proposons... (In a spirit of mutual compromise, we propose...)
- Afin de sortir de cette impasse, il conviendrait de... (In order to break this deadlock, it would be appropriate to...)
- Les conditions présentées nous semblent contraignantes, mais négociables. (The terms presented seem binding to us, but negotiable.)
Facilitation and mediation:
- Le médiateur a facilité un rapprochement des positions. (The mediator facilitated a convergence of positions.)
- Conformément au protocole établi, les parties conviennent de... (In accordance with the established protocol, the parties agree to...)
- Ce levier nous permettrait d'obtenir un accord plus équilibré. (This leverage would allow us to obtain a more balanced agreement.)
Key conditional structures: The conditional mood is essential in diplomatic French:
- Nous serions disposés à... (We would be willing to...)
- Il serait souhaitable que... + subjunctive (It would be desirable that...)
- Pourriez-vous envisager de... (Could you consider...)

常见错误
Nous sommes enclins à accepter.Nous serions enclins à accepter.In diplomatic French, use the conditional (serions) to soften the statement, not the indicative (sommes).
Nous voulons soumettre une contre-proposition.Nous souhaiterions soumettre une contre-proposition.Voulons is too direct; souhaiterions (conditional of souhaiter) is the diplomatic form.
Pour sortir de l'impasse, il faut que...Afin de sortir de cette impasse, il conviendrait de...Il faut is too direct for negotiations; il conviendrait de (it would be appropriate) is more diplomatic.
Le médiateur a facilitié un rapprochement.Le médiateur a facilité un rapprochement.The past participle of faciliter is facilité (one i), not facilitié.
Conformément au protocole, les parties sont d'accord.Conformément au protocole établi, les parties conviennent de...Être d'accord is informal; convenir de is the formal/legal term for reaching agreement.
