French uses present and past participles as adjectives to describe emotional states triggered by music. Understanding the difference is crucial.

Present participle (-ant) = the thing causing the emotion:

émouvant (moving) — Cette chanson est émouvante. (This song is moving.)
fascinant (fascinating) — Le concert était fascinant. (The concert was fascinating.)
apaisant (soothing) — La mélodie est apaisante. (The melody is soothing.)

Past participle (-é) = the person feeling the emotion:

ému (moved) — J'étais ému par cette chanson. (I was moved by this song.)
fasciné (fascinated) — Elle est fascinée par le jazz. (She is fascinated by jazz.)
apaisé (soothed) — Il se sent apaisé. (He feels soothed.)

Agreement rules: Participles used as adjectives agree in gender and number:

une musique apaisante (feminine), des concerts fascinants (masculine plural)
une femme émue (feminine), des spectateurs émus (masculine plural)

Cette chanson est émouvante
The song causes emotion (émouvant), it does not feel emotion (ému).
~~Je suis émouvant par cette mélodie~~
Je suis ému par cette mélodie
The person feels the emotion (ému), they are not the cause of it (émouvant).

Une musique apaisante
Musique is feminine, requiring une.
~~Des concerts fascinant~~
Des concerts fascinants
The adjective must agree in number: fascinants (masculine plural).
~~Elle est fasciné par le jazz~~
Elle est fascinée par le jazz
The past participle must agree with elle: fascinée (feminine).
