按语域选择词汇

在中文表达中，近义词的选择也会传达语气；英语同样如此。高级英语不只看字面意思，也看语域、语气和强度。

强度阶梯

大小：big → large → huge → enormous → vast → colossal
快乐：happy → pleased → glad → delighted → thrilled → ecstatic
愤怒：annoyed → irritated → angry → furious → livid → outraged

正式与非正式

非正式 ask → 正式 request → 强硬 demand
非正式 get → 标准 obtain → 正式 acquire
非正式 start → 标准 begin → 正式 commence

英语词语还带有隐含评价：slim 偏褒义，skinny 偏贬义。正式邮件用 request，朋友聊天通常不用过分正式的词。

常见错误

~~The house was very enormous~~
The house was enormous
Enormous 本身已含极强程度；加 very 重复。
~~She was very ecstatic~~
She was ecstatic
Ecstatic 是极限形容词；不用 very 修饰。
~~He demanded me to come~~
He demanded that I come / He asked me to come
Demand 的句型不同于 ask；用 demand that + 主语 + 动词原形。
~~She is a skinny model~~
She is a slim model
Skinny 含“过瘦”的贬义；slim 更褒义。
~~The situation aggravated because of the new policy.~~
The situation deteriorated because of the new policy.
Aggravate 常指使人恼火；描述情况恶化用 deteriorate、worsen 或 exacerbate。
~~She is a very comprehensive teacher.~~
She is a very thorough teacher.
Comprehensive 是“全面的”，不是“善解人意的”；此处应使用 thorough。
