Constructive feedback in Dutch requires balancing honesty with respect. The Dutch are known for directness, but professional feedback still demands tact at C1 level.
The sandwich model in Dutch: 1. Positief: Hoewel ik waardeer dat je zo hard hebt gewerkt... (While I appreciate that you worked so hard...) 2. Verbeterpunt: Ik zou willen voorstellen dat... (I would like to suggest that...) 3. Aanmoediging: Ik heb er alle vertrouwen in dat... (I have full confidence that...)
Useful feedback phrases:
- Wat mij opviel, was... (What stood out to me was...)
- Een aandachtspunt zou kunnen zijn... (A point of attention could be...)
- Heb je er al eens over nagedacht om...? (Have you considered...?)
- Het zou sterker zijn als... (It would be stronger if...)
Receiving feedback: Bedankt voor de feedback. Ik neem het mee. (Thanks for the feedback. I will take it on board.), Kun je een voorbeeld geven? (Can you give an example?).
Dutch directness vs diplomacy: In formal settings, soften with zou, misschien, and wellicht. In informal settings, Dutch colleagues may be more blunt: Dit kan echt beter. (This really needs to improve.).
