Epistemic particles in Dutch express degrees of certainty and doubt. Mastering them adds precision and nuance to your speech.
Soms (sometimes, perhaps — rhetorical):
- Perhaps (suspicious): Je denkt toch niet soms dat... (You don't think perhaps that...) — implies disbelief
- By any chance: Heb je soms iets te verbergen? (Do you perhaps have something to hide?)
Zeker (certainly, surely — but often ironic):
- Certainly: Dat is zeker waar. (That is certainly true.)
- Ironic/sarcastic: Je hebt zeker weer niet gestudeerd? (You certainly did not study again?) — the speaker expects a yes
- I suppose: Je wilt zeker mee? (You want to come along, I suppose?)
Misschien / wellicht / allicht:
- Misschien — informal: Misschien komt hij nog. (Maybe he will still come.)
- Wellicht — formal: Wellicht is het raadzaam om... (Perhaps it would be advisable to...)
- Allicht — of course / naturally: Allicht weet hij dat! (Of course he knows that!)
The choice between these particles reveals your attitude toward the proposition. Zeker can be genuine or sarcastic depending on intonation and context.

常见错误
Misschien weet hij dat. (emphatic)Allicht weet hij dat!For of course/naturally, allicht is stronger and more emphatic than misschien.
Je hebt zeker gestudeerd. (ironic)Je hebt zeker weer niet gestudeerd?The ironic use of zeker requires the negative niet and question intonation.
Heb je misschien iets te verbergen?Heb je soms iets te verbergen?Soms adds suspicion/accusation; misschien is neutral.
Wellicht komt hij. (casual)Misschien komt hij.Wellicht is too formal for casual speech; use misschien.
Het is zeker mooi.Het is zeker mooi, maar...Zeker often implies a but is coming; without it, use ongetwijfeld or beslist.
