Essay Structure & Signal Words
A well-structured Dutch essay follows the these-kern-conclusie (thesis-body-conclusion) pattern, connected by signal words.
Inleiding (Introduction) — State your thesis:
- In dit betoog zal ik beargumenteren dat... — In this essay I will argue that...
- De stelling luidt dat... — The thesis states that...
Kern (Body) — Use signal words to connect arguments:
- Ten eerste... Ten tweede... Ten derde... — Firstly... Secondly... Thirdly...
- Bovendien (moreover), Daarnaast (in addition)
- Daarentegen (on the other hand), Echter (however)
- Desalniettemin (nevertheless), Hoewel (although)
Important: After signal words in first position, the verb comes second (inversion):
- Bovendien is het belangrijk om... — Moreover, it is important to...
- Daarentegen kan men stellen dat... — On the other hand, one can argue that...
Conclusie (Conclusion) — Summarize and conclude:
- Samenvattend kan worden gesteld dat... — In summary, it can be stated that...
- Al met al... — All in all...
- Op grond van het bovenstaande... — On the basis of the above...
Signal words create coherence and guide the reader through your argument.
