Writing a Report in Dutch

Formal passive voice and nominalizations are key to professional report writing in Dutch.

Formal passive: Use worden for process and zijn for result. De resultaten worden hieronder besproken (The results are discussed below). De doelstellingen zijn bereikt (The objectives have been achieved).

Nominalizations make writing more formal: Instead of We concluderen dat... (We conclude that...), write De conclusie is dat... (The conclusion is that...). Instead of We bevelen aan dat..., write De aanbeveling is dat... (The recommendation is that...).

Report structure phrases: In dit rapport wordt ingegaan op... (This report addresses...), Uit de analyse blijkt dat... (The analysis shows that...), Op basis van de bevindingen kan worden geconcludeerd dat... (Based on the findings, it can be concluded that...).

Formal register markers: dient (should/must — formal), ten behoeve van (for the benefit of), met betrekking tot (with regard to), naar aanleiding van (following/in response to).

Use passive voice in formal reports. Worden + past participle is the standard.

The fixed preposition is tot (not aan) in met betrekking tot.

Use dient...te worden for formal obligation. Te goes before worden.

The formal expression is uit...blijkt dat (from...it appears that), not toont (shows).
