Nuancing Your Speech in Dutch

At B2 level, you need to express contrast, concession, and subtle distinctions. Dutch has rich connectors for this.

Hoewel (although) introduces a subordinate clause with verb-final word order: Hoewel het regent, gaan we toch wandelen. (Although it's raining, we're going for a walk anyway.)

Ondanks (despite) is a preposition followed by a noun: Ondanks de regen gingen we wandelen. (Despite the rain, we went walking.)

Desalniettemin and niettemin both mean "nevertheless" and connect two independent sentences. Desalniettemin is more formal.

Weliswaar... maar creates an "admittedly... but" structure: Het is weliswaar duur, maar het is de moeite waard. (It's admittedly expensive, but it's worth it.)

Enerzijds... anderzijds balances two perspectives: Enerzijds is het praktisch, anderzijds is het duur. (On one hand it's practical, on the other hand it's expensive.)

Pay attention to word order: after hoewel, the verb goes to the end of the clause.

After hoewel, the main clause uses inversion (verb before subject).

Ondanks is a preposition and needs a noun, not a clause. Use hoewel for clauses.
~~Het is weliswaar duur maar goed~~
Het is weliswaar duur, maar het is goed
Weliswaar...maar requires a comma and typically a full clause after maar.
~~Desalniettemin, ik vind dat...~~
Desalniettemin vind ik dat...
Desalniettemin triggers inversion: the verb comes before the subject.
~~Enerzijds het is goed, anderzijds het is slecht~~
Enerzijds is het goed, anderzijds is het slecht
Both enerzijds and anderzijds trigger inversion in the clause.
