Quantities and Shopping

Expressing quantities

Dutch uses quantity words directly before the noun (no "of"):

een kilo appels (a kilo of apples)
een fles water (a bottle of water)
een stuk kaas (a piece of cheese)
een pak melk (a carton of milk)

"Er" with quantities

Hoeveel heeft u er? (How many do you have?)
Ik heb er drie. (I have three of them.)

"Er" replaces the noun when a number follows.

Shopping vocabulary

boodschappen doen — to do groceries
de kassa — checkout/register
het mandje — basket
de tas — bag
goedkoop / duur — cheap / expensive

Tip: "Te duur" means "too expensive". "Te" + adjective = "too" + adjective.

Een kilo appels, alstublieft.A kilo of apples, please.
Heeft u een tas?Do you have a bag?
Dit is te duur.This is too expensive.

No "van" needed between quantity and noun: een kilo appels, een fles water.

De prijs is goedkoop.
"Goedkoop" is the base form. "Goedkoper" is comparative (cheaper).
~~Ik wil boodschappen doen.~~
Ik ga boodschappen doen.
"Boodschappen doen" typically uses "gaan" (going to do groceries).
~~Het is duur te.~~
Het is te duur.
"Te" (too) goes before the adjective: te duur, te goedkoop.
