Phone Conversations in Dutch
Phone formulas
Dutch has specific phrases for phone calls:
- Met [naam]. — This is [name]. (Answering)
- Met wie spreek ik? — Who am I speaking to? (Asking identity)
- Kunt u dat herhalen? — Can you repeat that? (Didn't hear)
- Ik bel u later terug. — I'll call you back later. (Callback)
- De lijn is bezet. — The line is busy. (Line busy)
Formal "u" vs. informal "je"
On the phone, especially in professional contexts:
- Kunt u mij doorverbinden? (formal)
- Kun je me even helpen? (informal)
- Zou u een bericht willen achterlaten? (very formal)
Separable verbs
- opnemen (to pick up): Ik neem op.
- ophangen (to hang up): Ik hang op.
- terugbellen (to call back): Ik bel terug.
Tip: "Bezet" means occupied/busy (for lines). "Druk" means busy (for people).

Ik bel u achter.Ik bel u terug.Use "terugbellen" (to call back), not "achterbellen".
De lijn is bezig.De lijn is bezet."Bezet" (occupied) is correct for phone lines, not "bezig" (busy with activity).
Ik hang de telefoon.Ik hang op."Ophangen" is separable: ik hang op.
