Writing a Short Story in Chinese (写短篇故事)

Narrative Tense: 曾经 / 那时候 / 就在这时

Chinese narrative fiction frequently uses these time markers:

• 曾经 (céngjīng) — once, used to (past narrative): 他曾经是个无所畏惧的人。
• 那时候 (nà shíhou) — at that time: 那时候，街上没有一个人。
• 就在这时 (jiù zài zhè shí) — just at this moment (dramatic): 就在这时，一阵风吹过。

Creating Vivid Descriptions: 把…比作 and 仿佛

• 把…比作 (bǎ…bǐ zuò) — to compare something to: 她把那段记忆比作一场梦。
• 仿佛 (fǎngfú) — as if, seemingly: 周围一片寂静，仿佛时间停止了。
• 充满 (chōngmǎn) — filled with: 她的眼睛充满了泪水。

Building Suspense: 突然 / 没想到 / 出乎意料

• 突然 (tūrán) — suddenly
• 没想到 (méi xiǎngdào) — unexpectedly, who would have thought
• 出乎意料 (chū hū yìliào) — contrary to expectation: 结局出乎所有人的意料。

Story Perspective Patterns

• 第一人称: 我走进那扇门，不知道等待我的是什么。
• 第三人称: 他站在雨中，独自承受着一切。
• Use 连…都 for emphasis: 他连自己的名字都忘了。
