Cultural Differences: Describing and Comparing
不但…而且… (búdàn…érqiě) — not only… but also:
- 这个习俗不但有趣，而且很有意义。(zhège xísú búdàn yǒuqù, érqiě hěn yǒu yìyì) — This custom is not only interesting but also very meaningful.
与…相比 (yǔ…xiāng bǐ) — compared with:
- 与欧洲相比，中国的餐桌礼仪很不一样。(yǔ Ōuzhōu xiāng bǐ, Zhōngguó de cānzhuō lǐyí hěn bù yīyàng) — Compared with Europe, Chinese table manners are quite different.
Key cultural phrases:
- 入乡随俗。(rù xiāng suí sú) — When in Rome, do as the Romans do. (lit. enter village follow customs)
- 我觉得这很有文化特色。(wǒ juéde zhè hěn yǒu wénhuà tèsè) — I think this has a lot of cultural character.
- 这在我们国家是禁忌。(zhè zài wǒmen guójiā shì jìnjì) — This is a taboo in our country.
表达
- 这个习俗让我很惊讶This custom really surprised me
- 在中国，这是很常见的In China, this is very common
- 我需要时间去适应I need time to adapt
- 这和我们国家不一样This is different from my country
- 我很尊重当地的风俗I really respect the local customs
常见错误
这个国家的习俗非常的不同。这个国家的习俗非常不同。Do not add 的 between 非常 and an adjective — 非常不同 is correct without 的.
我不习惯了这里的食物。我不习惯这里的食物。不习惯 (not used to) does not take 了 — it is a state, not a completed action.
与我的国家相比较，这里很不一样。与我的国家相比，这里很不一样。相比 is already complete — 较 is redundant. Use just 与…相比.
我慢慢适应了当地的生活了。我慢慢适应了当地的生活。了 should only appear once after the verb 适应 — remove the second 了 at the end.
这里的礼仪让我不舒服感觉。这里的礼仪让我感觉不舒服。感觉 (feel) is the verb — it should come before 不舒服. The object of 让我 is 感觉不舒服.
