Giving cooking instructions: 先...然后...
Sequence: 先 (xiān) + action, 然后 (ránhòu) + action Use 先...然后... to describe steps in order.
- 先把蔬菜切好，然后放入锅里炒。(Xiān bǎ shūcài qiē hǎo, ránhòu fàng rù guō lǐ chǎo.) — First cut the vegetables, then stir-fry them in the wok.
- 先加盐，然后再加酱油。(Xiān jiā yán, ránhòu zài jiā jiàngyóu.) — First add salt, then add soy sauce.
Common cooking verbs
- 炒 (chǎo) — stir-fry
- 煮 (zhǔ) — boil / cook in water
- 蒸 (zhēng) — steam
- 烤 (kǎo) — bake / roast / grill
- 切 (qiē) — to cut / slice
Describing a dish
- 这道菜很简单，只需要三个步骤。(Zhè dào cài hěn jiǎndān, zhǐ xūyào sān gè bùzhòu.) — This dish is very simple, it only needs three steps.

- 先把食材准备好。First step in any recipe
- 然后加入酱油和盐。Adding seasonings as a next step
- 这道菜怎么做？Asking how to make a dish
- 我最喜欢吃炒饭。Saying fried rice is your favourite dish
常见错误
先炒蔬菜，先加盐。先炒蔬菜，然后加盐。Use 然后 not 先 again for the next step
我蒸鱼用。我把鱼蒸了。Cooking method comes before verb or with 把; not 用 at end
