Tener + un/una (having a pet)
To say you have a pet, use tener + the indefinite article un (masculine) or una (feminine):
Example: "Tengo un perro." → "I have a dog."
Example: "Tengo una gata." → "I have a (female) cat."
Example: "No tengo mascota." → "I don't have a pet." (no article needed with negation)
Tener is also used to describe pet characteristics:
"Mi perro tiene los ojos marrones." → "My dog has brown eyes."
Articles: un/una vs. el/la
Spanish has two types of articles:
Indefinite (a/an) — used for unspecified or first mention:
- Singular: un (masculine) / una (feminine)
- Plural: unos (masculine) / unas (feminine)
Definite (the) — used for specific or known items:
- Singular: el (masculine) / la (feminine)
- Plural: los (masculine) / las (feminine)
Example: "Tengo un gato. El gato es bonito." → "I have a cat. The cat is pretty."
Example: "La mascota de mi amigo es un pájaro." → "My friend's pet is a bird."
