The Sandwich Method (Método Sanduíche)

A widely used approach: positive → improvement → positive.

1. Start with recognition:

• Quero começar por reconhecer o excelente trabalho que fez. (I want to start by acknowledging the excellent work you did.)

2. Introduce the improvement area:

• No entanto, gostaria de apontar uma área onde pode melhorar. (However, I would like to point out an area where you can improve.)

3. End positively:

• Tenho a certeza de que, com este ajuste, os resultados serão ainda melhores. (I am certain that, with this adjustment, the results will be even better.)

Softening Structures

• Direct (avoid) → Softened (prefer)
• Isto está errado → Talvez pudéssemos repensar esta abordagem
• Não funciona → Poderia funcionar melhor se...
• Tem de melhorar → Haveria margem para melhoria

The Imperfect Subjunctive for Tactful Suggestions

• Sugeriria que reconsiderasse a abordagem. (I would suggest you reconsider the approach.)
• Seria útil que desenvolvesse mais esta ideia. (It would be useful if you developed this idea further.)
• Gostava que pensasse em alternativas. (I would like you to think about alternatives.)

Asking for Feedback

• Gostaria de ouvir a sua opinião sincera. (I would like to hear your honest opinion.)
• Como avalia o meu desempenho? (How do you assess my performance?)
• Há algo que eu possa melhorar? (Is there anything I can improve?)

Cultural note: In Portuguese business culture, indirect feedback is often preferred. Use conditional and subjunctive moods to soften criticism.
