Describing Animals and Their Habitats
Plurals of Animal Names
Many animal nouns follow regular plural rules:
- o animal → os animais (ending in -al → -ais)
- o pássaro → os pássaros (regular -o → -os)
- o peixe → os peixes (regular -e → -es)
Viver em / Habitar
Use viver em to describe where animals live:
- Os golfinhos vivem no mar. — Dolphins live in the sea.
- Os pássaros vivem nas árvores. — Birds live in the trees.
Haver (Há) for Existence
Use há (there is/are) to talk about animal presence:
- Há muitos peixes neste rio. — There are many fish in this river.
- Não há baleias no Mediterrâneo. — There are no whales in the Mediterranean.
Adjective Agreement with Animals
Remember gender and number agreement:
- O gato preto / A gata preta — The black cat (m/f)
- Os animais selvagens — Wild animals
- As aves migratórias — Migratory birds

Os animales são bonitos.Os animais são bonitos.The plural of animal is animais (not animales as in Spanish). Words ending in -al form the plural with -ais.
Há muitos peixes neste rio. Eles são grande.Há muitos peixes neste rio. Eles são grandes.The adjective grande must agree in number: grandes for plural.
O meu cão chama Bobi.O meu cão chama-se Bobi.Chamar-se is reflexive when meaning to be called; the pronoun se is required.
Vi um golfinho em o mar.Vi um golfinho no mar.Em + o contracts to no. Always use the contracted form.
Eu gosto dos gatos pretas.Eu gosto dos gatos pretos.The adjective must match the gender of the noun: gatos (masculine) requires pretos (masculine).
