Idiomatic Expressions in Polish
Polish idioms (frazeologizmy) are fixed phrases where the meaning cannot be deduced from individual words.
Key concepts:
- Idiom — a phrase with a non-literal, fixed meaning
- Literal vs. figurative — dosłownie vs. w przenośni
- Collocation — words that naturally co-occur (kolokacja)
- Fixed expression — a set phrase that cannot be modified (utarte wyrażenie)
How idioms work:
Polish idioms often derive from historical, cultural, or agricultural contexts.
- Nie mój cyrk, nie moje małpy — Not my circus, not my monkeys (not my problem)
- Lać wodę — to pour water (to ramble, to say nothing of substance)
- Mieć coś na końcu języka — to have something on the tip of your tongue
Using idioms at C1 level:
- Recognize idiomatic meaning in context
- Use idioms appropriately in register
- Avoid mixing idioms from different registers
