Japanese poetry traditions are among the world's oldest continuous literary forms, with techniques that still influence modern writing.
Haiku (俳句)
The 五七五 (5-7-5 mora) structure is deceptively simple. True mastery requires:
- A 季語 (seasonal word): 桜 (spring), 蝉 (summer), 紅葉 (autumn), 雪 (winter)
- A 切れ字 (cutting word): や, かな, けり — these create a pause or emotional turn
- Matsuo Basho's famous haiku: 古池や蛙飛び込む水の音
Classical Grammar Basics
Classical Japanese (文語) differs significantly from modern Japanese:
- 〜なり (copula, = である): 春なり (It is spring)
- 〜たり (past/state): 花咲きたり (The flowers have bloomed)
- 〜べし (should/must): 学ぶべし (One should study)
Wabi-Sabi Aesthetics
侘び寂び represents the Japanese aesthetic of imperfect beauty. In poetry, this means valuing:
- Suggestion over statement
- Simplicity over ornamentation
- Transience over permanence

俳句は五七五の詩だ俳句は五七五の韻律を持つ詩だHaiku uses mora (拍), not syllables. The distinction matters — calling it simply a poem misses the metric precision.
季語がない俳句を書いた季語のない句は自由律俳句というA haiku without 季語 is called 自由律俳句 (free-form haiku). Traditional haiku always requires a seasonal reference.
侘びと寂びは同じ意味だ侘びと寂びは異なる美意識だWabi (rustic simplicity) and sabi (patina of age) are distinct concepts that complement each other, not synonyms.
切れ字は句の最後だけ切れ字は句のどこにでも置ける切れ字 can appear at the end of any line, not just the final one. Its position changes the haiku's rhythm and meaning.
古語は現代語と同じ意味古語は現代語と意味が異なることがあるMany classical words have shifted meaning. For example, をかし meant 'charming' in classical Japanese, not 'funny' as in modern usage.
