Understanding cognitive biases in Italian requires mastering structures that express tendencies and generalizations — key tools for discussing how our minds systematically deceive us.
Tendere a / Essere inclini a
The structure tendere a + infinitive expresses a habitual tendency: "Le persone tendono a cercare informazioni che confermano le proprie convinzioni." (People tend to seek information that confirms their beliefs.) This is the most common way to discuss cognitive biases in Italian.
Essere inclini a + infinitive conveys a similar meaning with a slightly more formal register: "Siamo inclini a sopravvalutare le nostre capacità."
Describing Biases
When discussing bias di conferma, use constructions like: "Si tende a ignorare le prove contrarie" (One tends to ignore contrary evidence). The impersonal si combined with tendere is particularly useful for discussing universal human tendencies.
The Role of the Unconscious
Many biases operate at the inconscio level. Italian uses a livello inconscio or inconsciamente to describe this. Understanding these patterns helps you critically analyze media: "L'ancoraggio distorce inconsciamente la nostra percezione del valore."
