Diplomatic Language in Negotiations
In Italian professional settings, international negotiations require a specific register known as linguaggio diplomatico. This register softens demands and proposals using conditional structures and hedging expressions.
The key pattern is "Saremmo propensi a..." (We would be inclined to...), which transforms a direct statement into a diplomatic suggestion. Compare:
- Direct: "Vogliamo uno sconto del 10%." (We want a 10% discount.)
- Diplomatic: "Saremmo propensi a valutare uno sconto del 10%." (We would be inclined to consider a 10% discount.)
Other essential diplomatic structures include:
- "Potremmo prendere in considerazione..." (We could take into consideration...)
- "Ci risulterebbe opportuno..." (It would seem appropriate to us...)
- "Non sarebbe possibile...?" (Would it not be possible...?)
The conditional tense (condizionale) is the backbone of diplomatic Italian. Using "vorremmo" instead of "vogliamo," or "proporremmo" instead of "proponiamo" signals respect for the other party's position. In an impasse, a mediator often uses these softened forms to facilitare dialogue and reach a compromesso that both sides find vincolante and reciproco.
