Non-restrictive relative clauses: il quale, la quale, i quali
In B2 Italian, non-restrictive relative clauses are set off by commas and add supplementary information without limiting the meaning of the antecedent.
Forms
- Masculin singulier : il quale
- Féminin singulier : la quale
- Masculin pluriel : i quali
- Féminin pluriel : le quali
Contextualised examples
- Il regista, il quale ha vinto numerosi premi, è considerato un maestro del cinema.
→ The director, who has won numerous awards, is considered a master of cinema.
- La sceneggiatura, la quale è stata scritta in soli tre mesi, risulta sorprendentemente coerente.
→ The screenplay, which was written in just three months, turns out to be surprisingly coherent.
- I personaggi, i quali rappresentano diversi strati sociali, interagiscono in modo convincente.
→ The characters, who represent different social strata, interact in a convincing way.
Difference from "che"
Che is more common in spoken Italian, but il quale / la quale is preferred in formal writing and film criticism because it avoids ambiguity in gender and number.

Типичные ошибки
Il regista che ho incontrato ieri, che ha vinto molti premi...Il regista che ho incontrato ieri, il quale ha vinto molti premi...Repeating 'che' creates ambiguity. Using 'il quale' in the second non-restrictive clause clarifies the referent.
La regia è stata fatta dal regista che è molto famoso, che dirige anche teatro.La regia è stata curata dal regista molto famoso, il quale dirige anche il teatro.'Fare la regia' is informal. Prefer 'curare la regia'. The second 'che' should become 'il quale'.
I personaggi, che sono diversi strati sociali...I personaggi, i quali rappresentano diversi strati sociali...The verb 'rappresentare' is required. You cannot omit the verb in a relative clause.
La colonna sonora, la quale è molto bella, accompagna il film.La colonna sonora, la quale sottolinea ogni emozione, accompagna magistralmente il film.'Molto bella' is too vague for B2 criticism. More precise and analytical phrasing is preferred.
Il film mi è piaciuto molto. Era bellissimo.Il film mi è piaciuto molto perché era avvincente.At B2 level, avoid vague judgments (bellissimo): specify why (avvincente, toccante, etc.).
Ho guardato un film che il regista è famoso.Ho guardato un film il cui regista è famoso.For the relative possessive, use il cui, not che il.
