The Art of Persuasion: The Mixed Conditional
The mixed conditional (condizionale misto) in Italian combines two tenses to express a link between a past hypothesis and its present consequence.
Structure
Se + pluperfect subjunctive ... present conditional
Se avessi studiato medicina, sarei medico oggi.
(If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor today.)
The hypothesis is in the past (avessi studiato = I had studied), but the consequence is in the present (sarei = I would be).
More examples
Se fossi cresciuto in Italia, parlerei italiano perfettamente.
(If I had grown up in Italy, I would speak Italian perfectly.)
Se avesse accettato quell'offerta, oggi guadagnerebbe il doppio.
(If he had accepted that offer, he would earn double today.)
Use in persuasion
This conditional is particularly effective in persuasive arguments to highlight how past choices affect the present:
Se il governo avesse investito nell'istruzione, avremmo una società più competitiva.
Distinction from the pure 3rd conditional
The pure 3rd conditional (Se avessi studiato, avrei capito) refers to a consequence also in the past. The mixed conditional links the past to the present.

Типичные ошибки
Se avrei studiato, sarei medico.Se avessi studiato, sarei medico.After a hypothetical 'se', the conditional is never used — always the subjunctive.
Se avessi studiato medicina, ero medico oggi.Se avessi studiato medicina, sarei medico oggi.The mixed conditional requires the present conditional (sarei), not the imperfect.
La prova che lui ha ragione è convincente.La prova che abbia ragione è convincente.After opinion/doubt expressions, the subjunctive is preferred at B2 level.
Voglio convincerlo a cambiare la sua posizione.Voglio convincerlo a cambiare posizione.'La sua' is redundant with 'convincerlo' — possession is implicit in Italian.
Secondo me penso che...Secondo me... / Penso che...Secondo me and penso che both express opinion: do not stack them.
Bisogna che tu vai subito.Bisogna che tu vada subito.Bisogna che requires the subjunctive: vada, not vai.
