Colours and Materials in Hindi
In Hindi, adjectives come before the noun — just like in English.
Colour adjectives and gender agreement
Most colour adjectives change form to match the gender of the noun:
- Red — लाल (laal) / लाल (laal) — no change
- Blue — नीला (neela) / नीली (neeli)
- Green — हरा (hara) / हरी (hari)
- Black — काला (kaala) / काली (kaali)
- White — सफ़ेद (safed) / सफ़ेद (safed) — no change
Tip: Adjectives ending in -आ (-a) change to -ई (-i) for feminine nouns. Adjectives like लाल and सफ़ेद never change.
Describing things
[colour/material] + [noun]
- लाल कुर्ता (laal kurta) — red kurta (m)
- नीली साड़ी (neeli saari) — blue sari (f)
- काला चमड़े का बैग (kaala chamde ka bag) — black leather bag
Asking about material
- यह किस चीज़ का है? (yah kis cheez ka hai?) — What is this made of?
- यह कपास का है। (yah kapaas ka hai.) — This is made of cotton.
- यह चमड़े का है। (yah chamde ka hai.) — This is made of leather.

- मुझे लाल रंग पसंद है।I like the colour red.
- यह नीली साड़ी सुंदर है।This blue sari is beautiful.

Типичные ошибки
नीला साड़ीनीली साड़ीSaari is feminine, so the adjective must use the feminine form neeli, not neela.
लाली कुर्तालाल कुर्ताLaal never changes — it is the same for masculine and feminine nouns.
बैग चमड़े का कालाकाला चमड़े का बैगIn Hindi, descriptors come before the noun. The correct order is adjective + material + noun.
