The principle of Show don't tell means conveying emotions and actions through concrete details rather than naming them.
Telling vs Showing:
- Telling: Er war wütend. → He was angry.
- Showing: Seine Faust schlug auf den Tisch. Das Glas klirrte. → His fist slammed the table. The glass clinked.
Realistic dialogue:
- Dialogue should reveal character without narrator commentary.
- "Mir ist das egal", sagte sie und drehte sich weg. → shows indifference through gesture.
Narrative pacing (Erzähltempo):
- Short sentences = tension, urgency
- Long sentences = reflection, calm
- Alternating both creates powerful narrative dynamics.
