Writing a Dutch opinion piece (opiniestuk) requires a clear argument structure, persuasive language, and advanced grammatical constructions.
Advanced participle constructions: These add sophistication to written Dutch:
- Gezien het feit dat de economie krimpt... (Given that the economy is shrinking...)
- Gelet op de huidige situatie... (In view of the current situation...)
- Afgaand op de cijfers... (Going by the figures...)
Argument structure: 1. Stelling (thesis): State your position clearly: Ik ben van mening dat... 2. Argumenten (arguments): Support with evidence: Ten eerste... Ten tweede... 3. Concessie (concession): Acknowledge counterarguments: Weliswaar..., maar... 4. Conclusie (conclusion): Reinforce your position: Al met al...
Connecting arguments: Use advanced connectors: daarentegen (on the other hand), bovendien (moreover), kortom (in short), al met al (all in all), in de eerste plaats (in the first place).
Engaging the reader: Use rhetorical questions, direct address (U zult zich afvragen...), and vivid examples. A strong opinion piece balances passion with reason.
