Newspaper Dutch (krantenNederlands) has a distinctive style that differs from spoken and academic Dutch. Understanding this register is essential for C1 readers.

Headline style: Dutch headlines often omit articles and use present tense for past events: Minister treedt af na schandaal (Minister resigns after scandal). Passive constructions are common: Verdachte aangehouden (Suspect arrested).

Nominal style: Newspapers prefer noun phrases over verb phrases: de stijging van de werkloosheid (the rise in unemployment) rather than de werkloosheid stijgt. This creates denser, more formal text.

Journalistic passives: Er wordt verwacht dat... (It is expected that...), Naar verluidt zou de minister... (Reportedly, the minister would...). These distance the journalist from unverified claims.

Common newspaper constructions:

Uit betrouwbare bron is vernomen dat... (From a reliable source it has been learned that...)
Het is nog onduidelijk of... (It is still unclear whether...)
De minister ontkent ieder verband. (The minister denies any connection.)

Reading Dutch newspapers daily is one of the best ways to internalize this register and expand your advanced vocabulary.
