Film Criticism in Dutch

Relative clauses with wat and hetgeen are key for expressing opinions about films.

Wat replaces a whole clause or an indefinite antecedent: De film was geweldig, wat me verraste. (The film was great, which surprised me.) Alles wat hij zei was overtuigend. (Everything he said was convincing.)

Hetgeen is more formal than wat: De regisseur maakte onverwachte keuzes, hetgeen de film versterkte. (The director made unexpected choices, which strengthened the film.)

For non-restrictive relative clauses (with comma), use die/dat: De acteur, die al drie prijzen heeft gewonnen, speelt de hoofdrol. (The actor, who has already won three prizes, plays the lead.)

Adjective use for reviews: een ontroerend verhaal (a moving story), een meeslepende vertolking (a gripping performance), visueel verbluffend (visually stunning).

Common review phrases: Het valt op dat... (It stands out that...), Wat opvalt is... (What stands out is...), De film laat te wensen over (The film leaves something to be desired).
