The Dutch alphabet
The Dutch alphabet has 26 letters, pronounced differently from English:
- G → a guttural sound, like clearing your throat
- IJ → often treated as a single letter, sounds like "ay"
- W → sounds like English "v"
- V → sounds like English "f"
Spelling your name
To spell your name, say each letter: "Mijn naam is Anna: A-N-N-A"
For email addresses:
- @ → apenstaartje (literally "monkey tail")
- . → punt (dot)
- - → streepje (dash)
Asking for clarification
- Kunt u dat herhalen? → Can you repeat that? (formal)
- Kun je dat herhalen? → Can you repeat that? (informal)
- Kunt u langzamer spreken? → Can you speak more slowly?
- Hoe schrijf je dat? → How do you write that?
Tip: The Dutch "G" sound is unique. Practice it gently — it comes from the back of the throat. In the south (Belgium), it is softer.

Типичные ошибки
Ik niet begrijpIk begrijp het nietIn Dutch, "niet" comes after the verb. Also add "het" (it): Ik begrijp het niet.
Hoe schrijf dat?Hoe schrijf je dat?Don't forget the subject "je" in questions. Dutch needs the subject pronoun.
Mijn email is anna at gmail punt comMijn e-mail is anna apenstaartje gmail punt comThe @ symbol is called "apenstaartje" in Dutch, not "at".
Kan u dat herhalen?Kunt u dat herhalen?With "u" (formal), use "kunt", not "kan". "Kan" is for "ik" and "hij/zij".
Ik versta nietIk begrijp het niet"Verstaan" means to hear/perceive. For understanding meaning, use "begrijpen".
