Style and Tone Adjustment in Chinese
At C1, you can write in multiple registers and adjust tone purposefully. This requires understanding what changes between formal and informal Chinese.
The same idea, three registers:
Idea: "I think this plan has problems."
- Formal (正式): 本人认为，该方案存在若干值得商榷之处，有待进一步论证。
- Professional (职业): 我认为这个方案有几个问题，需要我们认真讨论。
- Informal (非正式): 我觉得这个计划有点问题，咱们谈一下？
Key differences:
- Formal uses 本人 / 该 / 若干 / 之处 / 有待; informal uses 我 / 这个 / 有点 / 咱们
- Formal is objective and impersonal; informal is direct and personal
- Formal avoids contractions, discourse particles (啊, 吧, 嘛), and rhetorical questions
Tone shift vocabulary:
- 此外 → 另外 (formal → informal: "furthermore / additionally")
- 由此可见 → 所以 (formal → informal: "from this we can see / so")
- 请予以告知 → 告诉我 (formal → informal: "please inform me / tell me")
Consistency (一致性): Never mix registers within the same text. An essay that starts formally and shifts to casual loses credibility.

老实说，该论点存在一定的局限性。该论点存在一定的局限性，尚需进一步验证。老实说 (honestly speaking) is an informal hedging phrase inappropriate in academic Chinese; drop it and state the claim directly
