The imperative: giving commands
In emergencies, you need to give urgent commands. Spanish has a formal imperative (usted) that is essential in these situations:
- ¡Llame a una ambulancia! → Call an ambulance!
- ¡Vaya al hospital! → Go to the hospital!
- ¡Ayude a esa persona! → Help that person!
- ¡No se mueva! → Do not move!
Common formal imperative forms:
- llamar → ¡Llame! (Call!)
- ir → ¡Vaya! (Go!)
- venir → ¡Venga! (Come!)
- salir → ¡Salga! (Get out!)
"Necesito..."
A simpler way to express urgency is with necesito (I need):
- Necesito ayuda. → I need help.
- Necesito una ambulancia. → I need an ambulance.
- Necesito ir al hospital. → I need to go to the hospital.
Example: "¡Socorro! Necesito ayuda. ¡Llame a la policía!" → "Help! I need help. Call the police!"
Example: "Hay un accidente. Necesito una ambulancia." → "There is an accident. I need an ambulance."
