Countable and uncountable nouns
In Spanish, some nouns can be counted (un huevo, dos huevos) and others cannot.
Countable nouns use the indefinite article and can be made plural:
- un huevo → dos huevos
- una fruta → tres frutas
Uncountable nouns need a quantity word:
- un poco de arroz → a little rice
- algo de leche → some milk
- un vaso de agua → a glass of water
"Algo de" and "un poco de"
- algo de → some (general) — ¿Quieres algo de fruta? (Do you want some fruit?)
- un poco de → a little of — Quiero un poco de arroz. (I want a little rice.)
- mucho/a → a lot of — Hay mucha carne. (There is a lot of meat.)
Example: "¿Tienes algo de pan?" → "Do you have some bread?"
Example: "Quiero un poco de agua, por favor." → "I want a little water, please."
Note: el agua is feminine but uses el because it starts with a stressed "a." You still say algo de agua (not algo de el agua).
