Adjectives and gender agreement
In Spanish, adjectives must agree in gender and number with the noun they describe.
Adjectives ending in -o/-a:
- Singular: alto (masculine) / alta (feminine)
- Plural: altos (masculine) / altas (feminine)
Example: "Mi hermano es alto." → "My brother is tall."
Example: "Mi hermana es alta." → "My sister is tall."
Adjectives ending in -e or consonant do NOT change for gender:
- joven → joven (m/f) → jóvenes (plural)
- grande → grande (m/f) → grandes (plural)
Ser + adjective for descriptions
Use ser (not estar) for permanent characteristics and physical descriptions:
- yo → soy
- tú → eres
- él/ella → es
- nosotros → somos
- ellos/ellas → son
Example: "Ella es alta y morena." → "She is tall and dark-haired."
Example: "Mis padres son jóvenes." → "My parents are young."

Ellos son jóven.Ellos son jóvenes.Plural of joven is jóvenes (add -es and keep the accent)
Ella está alta.Ella es alta.Use ser (not estar) for inherent physical characteristics
Mi hermano es gordo y delgada.Mi hermano es gordo y delgado.Both adjectives must agree with the masculine subject
