Texting in Spanish
Text messages in Spanish are often shorter and more informal than spoken language. Knowing common abbreviations and closings will help you write natural messages.
Common abbreviations
Spanish texters shorten words to save time:
- tb or tmb = también (also)
- q = que (that/what)
- xq = porque / por qué (because / why)
- x = por (for/by)
- d = de (of/from)
- dnd = dónde (where)
- msg = mensaje (message)
- grx or grs = gracias (thanks)
Informal tone
In messages, Spanish speakers often:
- Drop the ¿ opening question mark: Qué tal? instead of ¿Qué tal?
- Use lowercase throughout: hola q tal instead of Hola, ¿qué tal?
- Skip accents: esta instead of está
