Register-Based Distinctions

- Говорить — neutral, general purpose

думать / размышлять / полагать
- Думать — everyday thinking: Я думаю, что это верно.

Intensity Gradations
страх / боязнь / ужас
- Страх — general fear

Key Rule: Age Words
Never use старый for people — it's rude. Use пожилой (elderly) or в возрасте. Старый is for objects: старый дом, старая книга.
