Querer / Precisar de / Pensar em + Infinitive
To express travel plans and needs, Portuguese uses these constructions:
Querer + infinitive — to want to:
- Eu quero viajar para Portugal. — I want to travel to Portugal.
Precisar de + infinitive — to need to:
- Precisamos de reservar o hotel. — We need to book the hotel.
Pensar em + infinitive — to think about / plan to:
- Estou a pensar em ir ao Brasil. — I'm thinking about going to Brazil.
Para vs. A with Destinations
Ir para — going to (longer stay, more permanent):
- Vou para Lisboa em julho. — I'm going to Lisbon in July.
Ir a — going to (short visit, return implied):
- Vou a Lisboa amanhã. — I'm going to Lisbon tomorrow (and coming back).
Useful Time Expressions
- na próxima semana — next week
