Ser vs. Estar in the Imperfect (Era vs. Estava)
Portuguese uses two verbs for "was": era (from ser) and estava (from estar). Choosing the right one depends on what you are describing.
Use ERA for
- Permanent qualities: "O hotel era bonito." — The hotel was beautiful.
- Characteristics: "A cidade era grande." — The city was big.
- Identity/essence: "Era um restaurante italiano." — It was an Italian restaurant.
Use ESTAVA for
- Temporary states: "O restaurante estava cheio." — The restaurant was crowded.
- Feelings: "Eu estava cansado." — I was tired.
- Weather at a moment: "Estava frio." — It was cold.
Tip: Think of era as "what it always was" and estava as "how it was at that moment."
