Talking About Weather and Seasons
Impersonal Verbs for Weather
Weather verbs are used in the 3rd person singular:
- Chove muito no inverno. — It rains a lot in winter.
- Neva na serra da Estrela. — It snows in Serra da Estrela.
- Está a chover. — It's raining.
Estar + Adjective for Current Weather
- Está frio / quente / fresco. — It's cold / hot / cool.
- Está nublado / vento / sol. — It's cloudy / windy / sunny.
Fazer + Noun for Weather Conditions
- Faz calor no verão. — It's hot in summer.
- Faz frio no inverno. — It's cold in winter.
- Faz bom tempo na primavera. — The weather is nice in spring.
Seasons with Prepositions
Use no/na (em + o/a) before seasons:
- No verão vamos à praia. — In summer we go to the beach.
- Na primavera as flores abrem. — In spring the flowers bloom.

Typowe błędy
Está chovendo muito.Está a chover muito.In European Portuguese, use estar a + infinitive, not estar + gerund.
Faz sol no verão.Está sol no verão. / Há sol no verão.For sun, use está sol or há sol. Fazer is used with calor, frio, bom/mau tempo.
Em o inverno faz frio.No inverno faz frio.Em + o contracts to no; em + a contracts to na. Always use the contracted form.
Eu prefiro outono do verão.Eu prefiro o outono ao verão.Preferir takes a + article (ao/à). Seasons also need the article (o outono).
Amanhã vai a chover.Amanhã vai chover.Ir + infinitive (future) does not use the preposition a between ir and the infinitive.
