Jogar vs. Praticar + Sport

Portuguese uses two different verbs depending on the type of sport:

Jogar — for ball/team sports (games you "play"):

  • Eu jogo futebol ao sábado. — I play football on Saturdays.
  • Eles jogam basquetebol. — They play basketball.

Praticar / Fazer — for individual sports and activities:

  • Ela pratica natação. — She practises swimming.
  • Nós fazemos corrida. — We go running.

Conseguir vs. Saber + Infinitive

Both mean "can" but differ in meaning:

Saber + infinitive — knowing how to (learned skill):

  • Eu sei nadar. — I can swim (I know how to).

Conseguir + infinitive — being able to (ability/success):

  • Eu consigo correr 10 km. — I can run 10 km (I'm able to).
  • eu — sei
  • tu — sabes

    Eu consigo correr 10 km.

Use conseguir for ability/achievement; saber is for knowing how to do something

At the gym you train (treinar), you don't play (jogar)

  • A minha equipa ganharam.
