Describing Rooms and Spaces

Ter vs. Haver for "There is/are"

Both express existence, but usage differs:

Ter (informal, very common in spoken Portuguese):

  • A casa tem três quartos. — The house has three bedrooms.
  • Tem um jardim grande. — There's a big garden.

Haver (há) (more formal):

  • Há dois andares. — There are two floors.
  • Há uma varanda na sala. — There's a balcony off the living room.

Ser vs. Estar for Describing the House

Ser — permanent characteristics:

  • A casa é grande. — The house is big.
  • A cozinha é moderna. — The kitchen is modern.

Estar — temporary states or locations:

  • A casa está arrumada. — The house is tidy (right now).
  • O sofá está na sala. — The sofa is in the living room.

Adjective Agreement

Adjectives must agree in gender and number:

  • O quarto é espaçoso. / A cozinha é espaçosa.
  • Os quartos são pequenos. / As salas são pequenas.

Zwroty

  • A minha casa tem dois quartos.My house has two bedrooms
  • A sala é muito espaçosa.The living room is very spacious
  • A cozinha está equipada.The kitchen is equipped — Describing amenities
  • Moro no terceiro andar.I live on the third floor
  • Tem uma vista bonita.It has a nice view — Describing a positive feature
  • A casa é muito acolhedora.The house is very cosy

Typowe błędy

  • A casa é arrumada.
    A casa está arrumada.

    Being tidy is a temporary state — use estar, not ser

  • O quarto é no segundo andar.
    O quarto fica no segundo andar.

    For the location of rooms, use ficar (fica), not ser

  • A cozinha é espaçoso.
    A cozinha é espaçosa.

    Cozinha is feminine — the adjective must agree: espaçosa, not espaçoso

  • Tem uma casa de banho grande.
    Há uma casa de banho grande.

    Both are acceptable, but há is more standard when not referring to possession

  • Moro no terceiro piso.
    Moro no terceiro andar.

    In European Portuguese, andar is preferred over piso for floors of a building
