Phone Calls in Portuguese

Answering the Phone

In Portugal, people answer the phone by saying "Estou?" (literally "I am?") or "Sim?" (Yes?). This is different from Brazilian Portuguese which uses "Alô."

The Verb Ligar (to call)

  • Eu ligo — I call
  • Tu ligas — You call
  • Ele/Ela liga — He/She calls
  • Nós ligamos — We call

Eu ligo-te mais tarde. — I'll call you later.

Asking Who Is Speaking

  • Quem fala? — Who is speaking?
  • Com quem deseja falar? — Who would you like to speak with?
  • Posso falar com...? — May I speak with...?

Useful Phone Phrases

  • Um momento, por favor. — One moment, please.
  • Pode repetir? — Can you repeat?
  • Vou passar a chamada. — I'll transfer the call.
  • O número está errado. — The number is wrong.

Telemóvel vs Telefone

In European Portuguese, a mobile phone is called telemóvel (not "celular" as in Brazil). A landline is simply telefone.

Zwroty

  • Estou? Quem fala?Answering the phone and asking who's calling
  • Posso falar com o João, por favor?Politely asking to speak with someone
  • Ele não está disponível de momento.Saying someone is not available right now
  • Pode ligar mais tarde?Asking someone to call back later
  • Vou deixar recado.Saying you will leave a message

Typowe błędy

  • Alô?
    Estou?

In European Portuguese, 'Estou?' is used to answer the phone, not 'Alô' (which is Brazilian)

  • Eu chamo para ti.
    Eu ligo-te.

'Ligar' means to call on the phone, not 'chamar' (which means to call/summon someone)

  • Quem é?
    Quem fala?

On the phone, 'Quem fala?' (who speaks?) is the standard way to ask who is calling

  • Eu telefono-te.
    Eu ligo-te.

While 'telefonar' exists, 'ligar' is far more common in everyday European Portuguese

  • O celular
    O telemóvel

'Celular' is Brazilian Portuguese; in Portugal, use 'telemóvel' for mobile phone
