Le Mot Juste: Choosing Exactly the Right Word in Korean

At C2, grammar is no longer the challenge — choosing the most precise word is. Korean has rich synonym sets where each word carries its own weight.

보다 vs 바라보다 vs 응시하다

  • 보다: neutral, everyday "look/see"
  • 바라보다: gaze at, look toward with longing or intention
  • 응시하다: stare intently, formal register

화나다 vs 분노하다 vs 격분하다

  • 화나다: everyday anger (I'm annoyed/upset)
  • 분노하다: formal anger, righteous indignation
  • 격분하다: intense rage, used for extreme situations

어감 (word feel) matters

  • 단순히 vs 그냥: both mean "simply/just" but 단순히 is written/formal, 그냥 is spoken
  • 즉시 vs 곧 vs 바로: all mean "immediately/soon" but with different degrees of urgency

Register matching

  • Using 격식체 words in casual conversation sounds stiff or comical
  • Using 비격식체 words in formal writing shows lack of sophistication

Avoiding repetition elegantly

  • Korean writers use pronoun-free sentence restructuring
  • Vary between abstract nominalizations and direct verb forms for sophistication

Zwroty

  • 그냥 vs 단순히그냥: spoken casual
  • 바라보다 vs 응시하다바라보다: gaze longingly
  • 말의 무게를 느끼다to feel the weight of words (literary)
  • 어감이 다르다the word feel is different (nuance)
  • 격식에 맞는 표현을 쓰다To use register-appropriate expression in writing
  • 뉘앙스를 살리다to preserve the nuance (in translation)

Typowe błędy

  • 그는 즉시 분노했다 (casual context)
    그는 바로 화났다

분노하다 is formal/literary; 화나다 suits casual narrative

  • 응시했다 (describing a casual glance)
    바라봤다 / 봤다

응시하다 implies intense, prolonged staring — wrong for a glance

  • 단순히 먹었어 (spoken)
    그냥 먹었어

단순히 is formal written style; 그냥 is natural in speech

  • 즉시 갈게 (casual promise)
    바로 갈게

즉시 sounds overly formal/stiff in casual spoken context

  • 말의 무게가 크다
    말의 무게가 무겁다

크다 describes size; 무겁다 (heavy) collocates naturally with 무게
