Korean is a fascinating system to analyze linguistically. It is an SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) language with agglutinative morphology — meaning grammatical functions are expressed by stacking suffixes onto a stem. For example: 먹다 (to eat) → 먹었겠더라면 (if it had been the case that had eaten) — a single verb stem carrying tense, aspect, modality, and evidentiality. 통사론 (syntax) studies how Korean's head-final structure places verbs and postpositions at the end of phrases, unlike English. 형태론 (morphology) explains how 어간 (stems) receive 어미 (endings): 가다 → 가고, 가서, 가면, 가지만. 음운론 (phonology) covers phenomena like 연음 (liaison), 경음화 (fortification), and vowel harmony remnants. Understanding these systems transforms you from a user of Korean into a genuine analyst of how the language works.
