Korean has two major categories of idiomatic expression. 사자성어 are four-character idioms borrowed from Classical Chinese, used in formal writing and educated speech. Examples: 일석이조 (一石二鳥 — one stone two birds), 유비무환 (有備無患 — prepared, no worry).

속담 are native Korean proverbs that use vivid imagery from everyday life. They are more casual and conversational. For example: 원숭이도 나무에서 떨어진다 (even experts make mistakes) or 가는 말이 고와야 오는 말이 곱다 (be kind to receive kindness).

At C1 level, you should recognize both types in context and use them naturally. Misusing a 사자성어 in casual conversation sounds pedantic; using a 속담 in a formal essay may seem too colloquial. The key is register awareness.

Zwroty

  • 일석이조예요 — 운동도 되고 스트레스도 풀려요Two birds, one stone — exercise + stress relief
  • 이번 상황은 완전히 오리무중이에요This situation is completely unclear/foggy
  • 유비무환이라고, 미리 준비해 두세요Be prepared — prevention is better than cure
  • 가는 말이 고와야 오는 말이 곱다잖아요You reap what you sow — be kind first
  • 티끌 모아 태산이라고, 조금씩 저축해요Every little bit adds up — save a little each time
  • 원숭이도 나무에서 떨어진다고, 실수할 수 있어요Even experts err — don't be too hard on yourself
  • 작심삼일이 되지 않도록 꾸준히 해요Stay consistent — don't let it fizzle out

Typowe błędy

  • 일석이조을 했어요
    일석이조예요 / 일석이조가 됐어요

사자성어 are noun phrases; use 이다/되다, not 하다

  • 원숭이가 나무에서 떨어졌어요 (literal meaning)
    원숭이도 나무에서 떨어진다 (idiomatic)

The proverb always uses the present tense generic form, not past tense narrative

  • 작심사일이에요
    작심삼일이에요

삼 means three (三), not four; this is a fixed four-character compound

  • 금상첨화를 했어요
    금상첨화예요 / 금상첨화가 됐어요

Like all 사자성어, use 이다 or 되다, not 하다

  • 속담을 반대로 사용했어요 — 가는 말이 고와야 오는 말이 고와요
가는 말이 고와야 오는 말이 곱다

Proverbs have fixed wording; 고와요 is not wrong grammatically but the set form ends in 곱다
