Słownictwo

  • 보다 / 관찰하다to see / to observe
  • 먹다 / 드시다to eat / to eat (honorific)
  • 말하다 / 언급하다to say / to mention
  • 크다 / 방대하다to be big / to be vast/massive

  • 물론 / 당연히of course / naturally
  • 문제 / 사안problem / issue (formal)
  • 생각 / 견해thought / opinion (formal)
  • 많다 / 풍부하다many / abundant, plentiful

Korean synonyms are rarely interchangeable — each carries distinct register, connotation, and context appropriateness.

Register difference: 먹다 (casual) vs 드시다 (honorific — used for elders/superiors). Using 먹다 to an elder is disrespectful. Register mismatch is the most common C1 error.

Formality shift: 말하다 (everyday speech) vs 언급하다 (formal writing/presentations). Similarly 빨리 (spoken) vs 신속히 (written/official).

Connotation: 힘들다 (hard/difficult — neutral) vs 고달프다 (weary/exhausted — emotional, literary register). 고달프다 conveys deeper suffering.

Precision: 문제 (any problem) vs 사안 (specific formal issue/matter) — 사안 is preferred in legal, political, and official contexts.

Strategy: When choosing a synonym, ask three questions: (1) Who am I addressing? (2) Is this spoken or written? (3) What emotional weight is appropriate? These three axes — addressee, medium, tone — determine the right word.

Zwroty

  • 새삼스럽다 vs 새롭다새삼 = known fact feels new; 새롭다 = genuinely new

Typowe błędy

Using 슬프다 twice loses the nuance. The second clause expresses feeling left out or let down — 섭섭하다 is more precise.

(when referring to a vague philosophical concept)

애매하다 fits situational ambiguity; 모호하다 fits conceptual or intellectual vagueness.

새삼스럽다 implies the fact was already known — combining it with 'a new fact' is contradictory.
