Code-switching in Japanese

Japanese speakers constantly shift between registers depending on context. This ability — 使い分け — is one of the most important skills at C2 level.

The Uchi-Soto Dynamic

The ウチ/ソト (inside/outside) framework governs all Japanese social interaction. With ウチ (family, close colleagues), you use casual forms. With ソト (strangers, clients), you use polite or honorific forms.

The same person can shift from ソト to ウチ as a relationship deepens:

  • First meeting: どちらからいらっしゃいましたか? (Where are you from?)
  • After becoming friends: どこから来たの? (same meaning, casual)

Real-time Register Shifting

In a single conversation, a Japanese speaker may shift registers:

  • Answering the phone at work: はい、田中でございます (formal)
  • Realizing it is a friend: あ、なんだ、お前か (very casual)

Honne and Tatemae

本音 (true feelings) and 建前 (public facade) represent another dimension of code-switching. The language itself changes depending on which mode you are operating in — indirect, hedging expressions for 建前, and direct, plain forms for 本音.

Mastering code-switching means not just knowing the forms, but sensing when to shift — reading the 空気 (atmosphere).

Zwroty

  • ちょっとよろしいですかMay I have a moment? (polite, to outsiders)
  • ねえ、ちょっといい?Hey, got a sec? (casual, to insiders)
  • 申し訳ございませんI sincerely apologize (formal business)
  • ごめん、悪いSorry, my bad (casual among friends)
  • ご検討いただければ幸いですI would appreciate your consideration (formal)
  • 考えといてくれる?Can you think about it? (casual request)

Typowe błędy

  • お客様、ちょっといい?
    お客様、少々よろしいでしょうか

ちょっといい is uchi (casual) language. With a customer (soto), use the full polite form with でしょうか.

  • 友達に「ご検討ください」
    考えてみてよ

ご検討ください is formal business language. Using it with a friend sounds absurdly stiff and creates social distance.

  • 彼女は本音をおっしゃった
    彼女は本音を言った

When describing someone expressing their honne (true feelings), honorific language contradicts the intimacy implied by honne.

  • 部長、マジですか?
    部長、本当でしょうか?

マジ is casual slang. With a department head (soto/superior), use 本当 with the polite tentative form.

  • 初対面で「お前」を使う
    初対面では「あなた」か名前を使う

お前 is exclusively for uchi (close relationships). Using it with someone you just met is extremely rude.
