Show, Don't Tell

In Italian creative writing, mostrare, non raccontare is the golden rule. Instead of stating emotions directly — Era triste (He was sad) — a skilled writer renders sensory details: Fissava il muro, le dita che stringevano il bordo del tavolo. The reader infers the emotion from concrete imagery. Italian literature excels at this through the tradition of verismo and its focus on observed reality.

Realistic Dialogue

Italian dialogue must sound authentic to register and region. Characters from different backgrounds speak differently: a Milanese professional uses different rhythms than a Neapolitan fisherman. Effective dialogue in Italian avoids disse repetition, favoring verbs like mormorò, sbottò, sibilò that carry emotional weight. The strategic use of dialect fragments adds authenticity without sacrificing readability.

Narrative Rhythm

Italian prose has a natural musicality. Short, punchy sentences (frasi spezzate) create tension; long, flowing periods (periodi complessi) build atmosphere. Mastering ritmo narrativo means alternating these deliberately, using punctuation — the em dash, the ellipsis, the semicolon — as rhythmic instruments.

Zwroty

Typowe błędy

  • Il protagonista era triste e solo.
Il protagonista fissava il soffitto, le mani inerti lungo i fianchi.

Show emotion through action and detail rather than stating it directly.

  • «Vieni qui» disse. «No» disse lei.
    «Vieni qui» mormorò. «No» ribatté lei.

Avoid repetitive dialogue tags; use varied verbs that convey tone.

  • Improvvisamente, un rumore forte lo svegliò.
Un tonfo lo strappò al sonno.

Avoid weak intensifiers like improvvisamente; use vivid verbs instead.

  • Poi andò al bar. Poi tornò a casa. Poi si addormentò.
Passò dal bar, rientrò, e si lasciò cadere sul letto.

Avoid repetitive connectors (poi); vary sentence structure for rhythm.

  • Era una notte buia e tempestosa.
Il vento sbatteva le persiane; la pioggia tambureggiava sui vetri.

Replace generic descriptions with specific sensory imagery.
