Mi alleno da / Corro da: ongoing duration in sport

To talk about a sports activity that started in the past and is still ongoing, you use the present tense + da + duration or starting point.

With a duration

  • Mi alleno da 3 mesi → I have been training for 3 months
  • Corro da due anni → I have been running for two years
  • Gioco a calcio da quando ero bambino → I have been playing football since I was a child

With a starting point

  • Corro da gennaio → I have been running since January
  • Mi alleno da lunedì → I have been training since Monday
  • Nuoto da questa estate → I have been swimming since this summer

Useful sport verbs

  • allenarsi → to train
  • correre → to run
  • nuotare → to swim
  • pedalare → to cycle
  • sollevare pesi → to lift weights

Difference from the completed past

  • Ho corso ieri → I ran yesterday (one-time, finished action)
  • Corro da gennaio → I have been running since January (still ongoing)

This structure conveys commitment and regularity, essential when talking about sport.

  • Corro da gennaio fa
    Corro da gennaio

'Da gennaio' already indicates the start, no need to add 'fa'

  • Mi sono allenato da ieri
    Mi alleno da ieri

For an action ongoing up to the present, use the present tense, not the passato prossimo

  • Ho corso per tre mesi e ancora corro
    Corro da tre mesi

When the action is still ongoing, use 'da' + present tense, not 'per' + passato prossimo

  • Non ti arrendere!
    Non arrenderti!

In negative imperative with tu, the pronoun follows the infinitive: non arrenderti

  • Ho corso per un'ora e mezzo
Ho corso per un'ora e mezza
