To narrate a past trip, Italian uses the passato prossimo for actions and the imperfetto for descriptions, connected by narrative connectors.
Passato prossimo for events: Siamo andati a Venezia la settimana scorsa. (We went to Venice last week.) Ho assaggiato una pizza napoletana buonissima. (I tasted a delicious Neapolitan pizza.) Ho scoperto un quartiere storico meraviglioso. (I discovered a wonderful historic district.)
Imperfetto for descriptions and habitual states: Il tempo era bellissimo. (The weather was wonderful.) C''erano molti turisti in piazza. (There were many tourists in the square.)
Narrative connectors: Prima... poi... infine... / All''inizio... alla fine... (First... then... finally... / At the beginning... in the end...)
Expressing opinions: È stato indimenticabile! (It was unforgettable!) Consiglierei a tutti di visitare Roma. (I would recommend everyone to visit Rome.) Tornerei sicuramente. (I would definitely go back.)
